DATA: united kingdom: census counts

Introduction

A Census of population is conducted every ten years in the United Kingdom by the Office for National Statistics (ONS). 1991 was the last year that such an exercise was undertaken.

Completion of the Census is a legal requirement for citizens of the United Kingdom. The basis for the Census, a description of questions and the format of data collection are detailed elsewhere.

Census data is collected, processed and anonymised by ONS prior to release to Crown-appointed Census Agents such as Business Geographics.

ONS release the data at the lowest level of aggregation, the Enumeration District (Output Area in Scotland), detailing population characteristics for groups of around 150-200 households.

Business Geographics add value to ONS Census data by extracting the most useful variables from the 9,000 or so available, aggregating the counts to commonly used geographical areas (such as postcode sectors or 1991 wards) and supplying the data for use in a variety of database packages or mapping systems.
