Introduction

Ordnance Survey Net-Map™ is currently the only OS product which may be licensed for reproduction over Internet (web-based) networks.

Ordnance Survey, the UK national mapping agency, were initially unwilling to allow the use of any of their Crown Copyright data on publicly available web sites.

However, following some concerted lobbying by the industry (in which Business Geographics, as developers of the first mainstream web-based GIS site - Election '97 - played a strong lead), Ordnance Survey conceded that a data product was necessary.

The result is a national data set based around extractions of several standard Ordnance Survey products, including:
Net-Map™ Release 1 was made available to a select set of Ordnance Survey Licensed Systems Suppliers (including Business Geographics) in late 1997. The current version (Release 2) was made available in October 1998.

Net-Map™ is the most detailed UK data set currently available for use on the web, and - because it is a scaleable vector product - is particularly well-suited for applications built around Autodesk MapGuide™.

Net-Map™ is available through a limited network of Ordnance Survey Licensed Systems Suppliers, including Business Geographics.

Data may be used either non-interactively or interactively on publicly available web sites.
